Summer Update from Garrett

It has been awhile since I last posted but that doesn’t mean I haven’t been doing anything fun and worth reporting.  Quite the contrary actually; I’m sure I’m not the only one who fills their summers full of adventures and activities to take advantage of the beautiful summers we enjoy in Minnesota. 2014 Minnesota Walleye Opener

May 29, 2014 by Northwoods'R 1 Comment

With the exception of a few years, we always have a group that heads to Leech Lake for the Minnesota walleye opener.  Our family has a long history with the lake.  Since I have been going up, we have had groups as large as eight in one cabin and this year we were down to three: my grandpa, my dad, and me.  My grandpa has been going up to Leech Lake for opening fishing since the 1960s.  I love hearing his stories of driving up in a school bus that his relatives had converted into a RV.  They didn’t have paved roads in some areas and every once in a while, they had to get out of the bus, run alongside, and push to get through the mud.  Those were the good old days! • We’re BIG FANS of off-season reflection, including this memory from a surprisingly productive and beautiful January 2018 day hunting ruffed grouse in Northern Wisconsin #thenorthwoodsr #projectupland #ruffedgrouse #wisconsin #uplandhunting #uplandlowlife #brushworn #partyingisagoodlife
  • Mission complete. A very rewarding time afield with my dog #thenorthwoodsr
  • Reliving a December hunt. #thenorthwoodsr #ansleyhfox #sageandbraker
  • Beautiful day on the river. Can’t beat 40 degrees in January! #thenorthwoodsr #driftlesswisconsin
  • THE RESULTS ARE IN | With the close of the 2018 season, it’s time to begin our annual period of reflection, which for me includes a look at some statistics. My grouse flushes per hour were 3.23 this fall which represents a 16% increase over last year. Woodcock flushes were 2.7 per hour which is down from last year but still contributes to a total flushes per hour number of 5.93 which translates to nearly a bird every 10 minutes... not bad! FUN FACTS | I hiked 119 miles over the course of 71 hours on 22 different days in the woods. I’m thankful for every one of them and I can’t wait until next year! - @nilarson13 #ruffedgrouse #woodcock #thenorthwoodsr #projectupland #publicland #uplandhunting
  • QUESTION OF THE DAY: How’s this for an escape route?! Would you have the patience to wait until he clears the cover and hits the open trail... or would you be standing there with two smoking barrels watching him sail to freedom?! 😁 #ruffedgrouse #escapeartist #englishsetter #onpoint #partridgepinch #projectupland
  • Snuck out for an afternoon hunt yesterday. Started off slow but finished with nine flushes in an hour and a half #thenorthwoodsr #ansleyhfox
  • I was fortunate enough to bag this December bird on a hunt with @grouseweims last weekend. Will it be my last? Time will tell, but there’s still some season left! All I want for Christmas.... - @nilarson13 #thenorthwoodsr #projectupland #onxhunt #ruffedgrouse #publicland #uplandhunting
  • Partridge Pinch from a hunt with my buddy, Jay on Saturday. He killed this bird with one foot on each side of the downed tree. His dog, Opie had this bird pinned and we covered his escape routes #thenorthwoodsr #partridgepinch
  • Squeezing in all of the time in the woods that I can. Had awesome weather this weekend and put a couple in the bag #thenorthwoodsr
  • PSA - make sure you’re informed on how to release your dogs from traps. My shorthair stuck her head in this trap/box on Sunday. Body grip traps are designed to suffocate animals. Fortunately I was prepared and was able to get her out before she suffocated. #thenorthwoodsr
  • Found this bad boy while out chasing grouse yesterday. #thenorthwoodsr #thebigbadwolf
