As the title of this post suggests, today I want to highlight a unique project that ties together both my love and passion for the sport of grouse and woodcock hunting, as well as my “day-job,” working for the Ruffed Grouse Society as a Regional Director. What I’m referring to is a video series produced by A.j. DeRosa and the crew at Dangerous Cow Publishing, known as ‘Project Upland’. DeRosa has dedicated his talents to the Ruffed Grouse Society mission by helping to produce these outstanding short films which highlight the beauty, splendor and magic we all live and breathe each fall as grouse and woodcock hunters.
What separates ‘Project Upland’ from a traditional “hunting” video is the cinematic experience DeRosa utilizes to capture all of the things that make grouse and woodcock hunting so special. Of course no one could ever capture the magic entirely on camera, however the ‘Project Upland’ films are a step in the right direction and truly capture the experience in a way that I have never seen before. The first two videos have been released which have been linked to below. The remaining videos will follow on a predetermined release schedule.
The first video titled “Because They’re Wild” follows my co-worker and Regional Director to the Northeast, Tripp Way, through the woods as he hunts with his GWP . Later, Way is joined by staunch RGS supporter, Perry Masotti as they share some time in the grouse woods. While each video in the series has a bit of a different flavor and includes a different cast of characters, the underlying message is, for the most part, unified.
For those of us that hunt upland birds we are often driven by a deep-rooted passion and desire to hunt. Whether that drive and desire is the result of experiences through one lifetime or many, many lifetimes before us, it doesn’t matter. What does matter is that the passion exists and envelops so many of us in the fight for the sport we love. ‘Project Upland’ is the culmination of that passion and desire to hunt upland birds, pursuing them throughout the wild habitat that exists, often times, in our own backyard. Let it be known however that without the habitat, the birds do not exist and without the birds there is no upland hunting.
Grouse, woodcock and other upland bird species need your support now more than ever, so please, as you enjoy the ‘Project Upland’ series and reminisce about the joys that upland hunting has brought you and/or will bring you in the future, please consider donating to the conservation group(s) you most closely align with.
