Here in Minnesota, it seems like we can’t pull ourselves away from discussions around the weather. The forecast is looking bleak as we are expecting 8-14 inches of snow over the next couple days. Some people may believe that the end of winter is determined by the groundhog while others believe that the Vernal Equinox on March 20th indicates the beginning of spring. I on the other hand, believe that the start of spring is marked when the woodcock return to town.
I saw the first woodcock of the year yesterday which happened to be April 1st. This is no April Fools joke! I hit a local park and my dog and I flushed over thirty woodcock in an hour and a half. I went back today with a camera hoping to capture some good pictures of my GSP, Stella. She performed as I suspected and as I have trained her to. I honestly lost count of how many points, flushes, and birds I saw tonight. I tried to capture the evening through the lens of my camera but the pictures alone cannot paint a picture well enough to describe how great it was to see my dog tearing up the woods. Hunting season is just five and a half months away and I am now counting down the days until the grouse opener.
