With the first weekend of MN Firearms Deer Season in the books, neither Garrett nor myself have filled our buck tags. It was not for lack of opportunity however as we both had a chance at a mature buck during our hunts. Before we get into the individual scenarios and lessons learned, I would like to say that we had an awesome opening weekend in MN this year. There is just something different about hunting in the spring. If you have never watched the sun come up while sitting out in the woods or on the edge of a field, I highly recommend that you do it. Whether you are hunting or not, I guarantee you won’t regret it.
What I find so fascinating about sitting out in the spring is the amount of life that returns after a long and cold Minnesota winter and how active everything is in the early hours of the day. Well before the sun came up, I heard pheasants cackling, turkeys gobbling, waterfowl flying and calling, and even the neighbor’s rooster crowing. [Read more…]
What should you expect from a four-month old english setter? I’m not exactly sure, but what I can tell you is that I could not ask anything more of my pup after a full month of grouse and woodcock season. Given that he is my first bird dog, my experience is quite limited. It’s official, spring has FINALLY arrived in Northern Minnesota and the grouse have taken notice! This past weekend I took a trip up to the North country on a mission to locate and capture, via trail cam, the Spring King on display in the grouse woods.
